FAQ

What is BlahPlay?

A lobby, friends list and connection service for playing games together online on MiSTer FPGA hardware and PCs: invite a friend, both machines lock into the same game in sync, and you play as if you were on the same couch.

What do I need?

A MiSTer with the BlahPlay app, or a PC with the BlahPlay app; your own copy of a supported game; and an internet connection. A wired connection gives the smoothest play. Sign up for a free BlahPlay name on the join page.

Which games work?

Only games we have tested to stay perfectly in sync. At launch that means a hand-picked list of arcade games, and more are added as they pass testing. See the compatibility list.

Is it really free?

Yes. MiSTer vs MiSTer arcade cross-play is free and always will be. Arcade play between MiSTer and PC is free too. Console games on MiSTer (SNES, Genesis and more) and online couch co-op for PC games come with Casual and Pro, along with a vanity name and more relayed time; see what each tier gets.

What is a relay, and why is relayed time limited?

Most players connect directly to each other, which costs nothing and is unlimited. Some home routers block that, so the connection goes through a relay server instead, which costs money per hour. Every tier includes relayed time each week; direct play never counts against it.

Will there be lag?

Both machines run the game in lockstep with a small input delay chosen from your connection, so the game never stutters or rewinds. Closer friends and wired connections feel best. The pairing screen shows the connection quality before you start.

Do you provide the games?

No. BlahPlay never provides, sells or sends games, ROMs or firmware. You need your own copy, and games are never sent between players.

Is voice chat private?

Yes. There is no listening, recording or transcribing feature. Voice is encrypted (ChaCha20-Poly1305) and goes directly between players. Players who are not on your friends list start muted. Details in the privacy policy.

Someone is being a jerk. What can I do?

Mute them with one press (they are not told), block them, or report them from the session. Reports are reviewed by a person; see the community rules.

Patreon or the website: where should I pay?

Casual is cheaper on the BlahPlay website than on Patreon, and Pro is sold only on the website. Patrons pledging $5 or more get Casual automatically; $10 or more gets Pro.

How do I cancel?

Website subscriptions: account page → Manage subscription. You keep your tier until the end of the period you paid for. Patreon memberships are managed on Patreon.

What happens if my support stops?

You keep your BlahPlay name, friends and free play. Paid extras end with your membership or subscription.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, any time, on the account page. Cancel any website subscription first.

Where the money goes

BlahPlay runs on supporters. Direct connections between players cost nothing to run; relays for players behind strict routers, couch co-op streaming and the service itself do. Here is the monthly bill, by category.
